Supporting Our Trans Community

Official update from Herts SU following the recent Supreme Court ruling

Supporting Our Trans Community Supporting Our Trans Community

The recent UK Supreme Court announcement that ruled the terms “woman” and “sex” in the Equality Act 2010 refer specifically to biological women and biological sex only, excluding transgender women.

We understand the impact that this ruling will have on our students here at Herts, particularly for our trans, non-binary and intersex students. We want to be clear that trans students are welcome here at Hertfordshire, and we stand proudly with you.

While we take some time to understand the implications of this ruling locally, it’s important to remember that existing text within the Equality Act 2010 outlines clear protections for trans people from discrimination based on gender reassignment.

During times like this, it’s important to hold our community and our friends close. If you aren’t trans, but are concerned about your trans friends, check in on them because this decision and the associated discussions taking place is creating an unwelcoming and uncertain environment. We are stronger as one whole Herts community. If you or any student need support as a result of this ruling or any of the discourse taking place as a result, we recommend getting in touch with any of the following:
