Enactus Society

Enactus Hertfordshire is part of a global organisation that applies entrepreneurial action led by students to create a better and more sustainable world.

Who Are We?

Enactus is a global program led by university students who aim to make the world a better place through entrepreneurial action. We collaborate with those in need in our local communities and sometimes abroad, empowering them through our projects in an economically, environmentally, and socially sustainable manner.

At Enactus, we believe that when students work together and unleash their full potential, they can truly change the world. That's why we embrace the motto 'if you give a man a fish, you feed him for a day, but if you teach a man to fish, you feed him for a lifetime.' Our volunteer programs and projects center around students transforming the lives of others by transferring their skills and knowledge to assist them, all of which contribute to long-term positive change.

What Do We Do?

At Enactus, student-led projects from the University of Hertfordshire are making a daily impact on lives, both locally in Hatfield and beyond. Here are some current projects:

Project 1: 💻📚 Digital Literacy & Business English Project

The Digital Literacy & Business English Project, founded and led by Minhhah Naveed as Chair of Enactus Hertfordshire, is a community-driven initiative designed to empower elderly women by combining essential English language learning with digital literacy skills.

What makes this project unique is its business-focused approach to literacy. Instead of teaching English in isolation, participants are introduced to practical business-related vocabulary such as money, profit, product, investment, shop, customer, and business. Using literacy books and iPads, they practise writing words, building sentences, and applying this vocabulary in everyday contexts such as shopping, transactions, and conversations about products and services.

The project goes beyond language learning. It equips participants with digital confidence. For many, this is their first time using an iPad. Step by step, they are guided through opening apps, typing, navigating screens, and exploring tools that connect them with family, community, and essential online resources.

To reinforce learning, interactive activities are designed where participants fill in missing words, practise role-plays (e.g., shopping dialogues), and work through literacy book exercises that link directly to business and everyday life. This makes learning relevant, practical, and empowering.

The impact is already visible: participants are not only building stronger communication skills but also gaining confidence, independence, and resilience. The project fosters inclusion and empowerment, helping elderly women embrace digital tools and language skills that open doors to new opportunities. The Digital Literacy & Business English Project is more than education. It is about empowering women, building confidence, and creating pathways to growth and connection through innovation and sustainability. 🌍

Project 2:

The Habiba Garden Project, founded and chaired by Minhhah Naveed (Chair of Enactus Hertfordshire) in partnership with Hawa Multicultural CIC, is a student-led initiative that empowers the women of the Saheli Day Centre through gardening, sustainability, and personal development.

Led by students from the University of Hertfordshire, the project focuses on planning, restoring, and maintaining the garden, while guiding participants in growing vegetables, fruits, and herbs. Beyond cultivating food, the project nurtures confidence, teamwork, and resilience, helping women develop practical skills that contribute to their personal growth and wellbeing.

Habiba Garden is more than just a green space. It is a place of cultural exchange, empowerment, and connection. Participants gain hands-on gardening experience, practice sustainable methods that reduce waste, and build environmentally friendly habits. They also develop language and communication skills, strengthen social bonds, and foster a sense of ownership and belonging.

By combining education, sustainability, and community collaboration, the Habiba Garden Project creates a lasting positive impact for participants, the wider community, and the environment. It demonstrates how a simple act of gardening can transform lives, cultivate resilience, and inspire change for a greener, more inclusive future. 🌍✨

Project 3: ♻️ Bottle2Better – Turning Bottles into Something Better

Bottle2Better is a sustainability initiative that empowers students to tackle plastic waste by collecting used bottles from schools, universities, and communities, then transforming them into practical items for daily life. Instead of seeing plastic bottles as rubbish, this project reimagines them as valuable resources that can be reshaped into creative, eco-friendly solutions.

Students are encouraged to design and produce innovative products such as eco-planters, desk organisers, lamps, watering cans, storage containers, and recreational tools, while also coming up with their own unique ideas. These creations are not only functional but also durable and reusable, helping to reduce the demand for new plastic items and encouraging a culture of upcycling.

The project delivers a powerful environmental and educational impact: it reduces single-use plastic waste, promotes sustainable habits, and fosters an understanding of the circular economy. At the same time, students gain practical experience in problem-solving, design thinking, creativity, and teamwork, which builds confidence and strengthens their skills for the future.

Aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) – including SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), SDG 13 (Climate Action), SDG 4 (Quality Education), and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) – Bottle2Better proves that small changes can lead to big impact.

Every bottle collected is not just waste, but an opportunity to turn it into something better for people, community, and planet. 🌍
