Manifesto for International Students Officer at the University of Hertfordshire

As a candidate for the International Students Officer role, I am dedicated to creating a supportive, vibrant, and empowering environment for our international student community at the University of Hertfordshire. With over 140 nationalities represented, our diverse community deserves to feel connected, understood, and equipped to succeed in every aspect of university life. Here’s how I intend to achieve this:

1. Advocacy and Representation

  • Enhanced Support Access: By improving access to support services, such as the Students’ Union Advice & Support Centre, I will ensure students have resources for housing, visa assistance, and health services. Regular check-ins and feedback sessions will help identify challenges and tailor support to meet evolving needs.
  • Academic and Career Empowerment: I will work with the University’s academic and careers services to create targeted workshops on employability, academic expectations, and transitioning to the UK work environment. This includes specific guidance on securing placements, internships, and work-study options.

2. Cultural Enrichment and Social Inclusion

  • International Event Series: Establish monthly multicultural events celebrating the diverse heritages within our student body. Events like cultural nights, global food festivals, and art showcases will foster a sense of belonging while providing opportunities for cross-cultural learning.
  • Peer Buddy Program: Launch a peer mentorship program where current students support newcomers, creating friendships that aid in a smoother adjustment. A mentorship program will pair new international students with senior peers to help ease cultural and academic adjustments.

3. Practical Resources and Support

  • Accommodation and Financial Guidance: Organize workshops to guide students through finding suitable housing and managing budgets, ensuring that students feel comfortable and confident living independently in the UK.
  • Visa and Employment Support: Partner with the careers service for comprehensive workshops on visa regulations and job market insights, providing clarity on legal requirements and opportunities for part-time work, internships, and post-graduation options.

4. Mental Health and Wellness

  • Accessible Mental Health Resources: Mental health remains a top priority. I will promote access to University resources tailored for the unique challenges international students face. Wellness workshops and support groups will help students manage stress and homesickness, ensuring a positive and supportive environment.
  • Social Well-Being Initiatives: Organize group activities that allow students to engage in both campus and local communities, building a sense of home away from home.

5. Transparency and Communication

  • Open Feedback Channels: Monthly feedback sessions and open office hours will keep communication between international students and the SU clear and responsive, allowing us to address concerns proactively.
  • Monthly Updates: A regular newsletter will keep students informed about events, important deadlines, and available resources, fostering stronger connections and ensuring no one is left out.

With your support, I aim to make the University of Hertfordshire a thriving, inclusive space where international students can excel and feel truly at home. Together, let’s make our community one that celebrates diversity, supports well-being, and empowers every student to achieve their full potential.
