As a master’s student in Life and Medical Sciences and a UH Biomedical Science alumni, I am excited to run for Lead Student Representative for Black students for the upcoming year. I aim to foster a supportive, empowering environment that celebrates Black identity, builds community, and drives meaningful change. With family roots in Sub-Saharan Africa and a global network of friends, I bring a multicultural perspective and a deep commitment to representing Black students and other underrepresented voices at the University of Hertfordshire.
Key Objectives for the Year:
-
Host Three High-Impact Events or Projects:
- Cultural Celebration and Community Building: Organize events celebrating Black culture and identity, creating spaces where students can connect, share their experiences, and feel a strong sense of belonging.
- Mental Health and Wellness Initiatives: Develop wellness-focused events addressing Black students' unique challenges, promoting mental health support and resilience-building.
-
Build Unity and Solidarity Across Cultures:
- Strengthen connections across cultural backgrounds by hosting events that promote understanding and foster a sense of community within UH’s diverse student body.
- Collaborate with other student groups to organize joint events, encouraging intercultural exchange, building bridges, and fostering long-lasting friendships across our university.
-
Enhance Representation in STEM and Academia:
- Advocate for greater visibility and support of Black students in STEM and academia by working closely with faculty and UH leadership to prioritize diversity in curriculum and representation.
- Promote initiatives that encourage Black students to pursue roles in research, academia, and professional fields, ensuring they feel empowered to contribute to and excel in these areas.
-
Champion Female Empowerment Across All Fields: Utilize my background in fundraising to support initiatives that empower female students, reducing barriers and promoting equal opportunities across all disciplines.
-
Be a Strong Voice for Black Student Needs and Experiences:
- Serve as an advocate for Black students, actively listening to and addressing their concerns and goals within the university.
- Establish clear and accessible channels for feedback, ensuring students’ voices are continuously heard and that their experiences are considered in university decisions.
Why Choose Me for This Role? Having navigated both my undergraduate and postgraduate journey at UH, I understand the unique challenges and opportunities Black students face. I’m committed to creating impactful change through events, advocacy, and community-building that celebrate and uplift Black students. For the coming year, let’s work together to build an inclusive, inspiring environment where every Black student feels seen, valued, and empowered.
