Introduction: Being an international mature student at the University of Hertfordshire, I am aware of the challenges and experiences that mature students go through. Studying while working and taking care of other responsibilities can be quite overwhelming. The contribution of such experiences is that such individuals also possess the commitment, drive, and perspective that enable them to focus on studies as well as on the university community. I am determined to play the lead role for mature students as their representative while ensuring that our needs are met, and efforts are made to create an academic and social environment that will be beneficial to mature students.
Aims:
- Promote the Voice of the Mature Student: Mature students need an advocate from time to time and I will be that person to ensure their interests are considered in policy making at the university. Assist in solving matters with the help of university personnel, which include the need for proper learning arrangement, appropriate career counseling and relevant support services. Create and promote a conducive environment at the University of Hertfordshire, where the needs of mature individuals seeking education are met.
- Build Bridges Among Senior Students: As noted, mature students comprise a heterogeneous group that is composed of individuals from varying backgrounds, cultures and generations. I will strive to strengthen the bond between all of us so that we can share our experiences, help each other out and appreciate our achievements. To this end, I will organize various events and initiatives on a regular basis, which will help promote interaction and socialization among mature students, so that they can feel at home in our university.
- Provide More Opportunities for Growth: However, these students may also have career and personal objectives. I shall lobby for such inputs and impact strategies that relate to our career advancement and growth. Working with the university’s careers assistance and outside practioners, I shall bring in opportunities for attaining the educational and vocational aspirations of grown-up students.
Final Thoughts: I am passionate about serving the mature students at the university of Hertfordshire such that they can voice out their concerns, get support and even feel encouraged to act. I come from an international background, and I have experienced it on a personal level so I want to represent ‘us,' create an active support system, as well as events which add value to our university experience. As one let us join hands and make the University of Hertfordshire a friendly, inclusive and fulfilling for mature students. I appreciate your assistance!
