Introduction

Hello, everyone!

I’m Chathur Semal Rajapaksha, and I’m excited to stand for the role of International Students' Officer here at the University of Hertfordshire. As an international student myself for the past 10 months, I truly understand the challenges we face. My aim is to ensure that we have a fantastic experience while studying here and that we feel right at home in this wonderful university!

Vision

My vision is to create a vibrant and inclusive community for international students. Let’s celebrate our diverse cultures and backgrounds while making sure every student feels valued and supported throughout their journey.

Key Qualities and Experience

1. Positive Attitude and Resilience:
I embody a “Yes We Can” mentality. Whatever challenges come our way, I’m ready to tackle them! Even when language barriers exist, I strive to understand and connect with everyone, ensuring that no one feels isolated.

2. Strong Leadership Skills:
I believe that effective leadership involves providing proper guidance. I’m committed to offering valuable advice and demonstrating how true leaders listen and act in the best interests of our community.

3. Friendly and Approachable Nature:
I’m known for being friendly and approachable. I love engaging with everyone and aim to create a relaxed atmosphere where all students feel comfortable sharing their experiences and concerns. A warm smile can go a long way!

4. Extensive Work Experience:
Back in Sri Lanka, I gained valuable experience in training and development. I hold an Advanced Diploma in Teaching, Training, and Assessing Learning from City and Guilds UK. I have provided training across the island for employees at Dialog Axiata PLC, which has equipped me with a strong understanding of how to support and empower individuals. For references, you can contact Dr. Hans Wijayasuriya, CEO of Dialog Axiata PLC, Chief Executive Officer – Telecommunications Business & Group Executive Vice President, Axiata Group (hans@dialog.lk).

5. Dedication to Student Welfare:
My time spent in the Learning Resource Centre (LRC) has allowed me to connect with many fellow international students, understanding their needs and challenges. I am committed to advocating for improved support services to ensure we all have the resources we need to succeed.

Objectives

If elected as your International Students' Officer, I will focus on the following key objectives:

1. Organise Inclusive Events:
I will plan engaging events each year that celebrate our cultures, foster networking, and create a sense of belonging among international students.

2. Enhance Support Services:
I will advocate for improved mental health resources, academic support, and assistance with visa and immigration issues, ensuring that international students feel supported throughout their studies.

3. Create a Peer Mentorship Programme:
I will establish a peer mentorship programme that pairs new international students with experienced students, helping them navigate university life and build connections.

4. Foster Open Communication:
I will create open lines of communication between international students and university administration. Regular feedback sessions will ensure that your concerns are addressed and that we collectively shape our university experience.

5. Promote Cultural Exchange:
I will initiate programmes that promote cultural exchange between international and domestic students. By encouraging collaboration and understanding, we can break down barriers and foster a more united campus community.

Conclusion

Together, we can transform the University of Hertfordshire into a welcoming place for all international students. I am passionate about advocating for our community and believe that my skills and experiences make me the ideal candidate for this role. I would greatly appreciate your support in this election!
