Hi,

I am Erum Bibi, an MSc Psychology student and the class representative. I am excited to announce my candidacy for the position of Mature Students' Officer. As a mature student myself, I understand the unique challenges and strengths that we bring to the university experience. I am committed to ensuring that mature students are fully supported, heard, and empowered throughout our academic journey.

My Vision
I believe mature students deserve an inclusive, supportive environment where we can thrive both academically and socially. My goal is to build a community where mature students feel connected, valued, and fully equipped to succeed, with special attention to technology accessibility, cultural adjustment, and accessibility.

Key Priorities

1. Enhance Support Services for Mature Students
Returning to university after a gap of many years can be daunting, as I experienced firsthand. Many mature students, myself included face challenges in adapting to new technologies, navigating campus, and balancing multiple responsibilities. My initiatives include:

  • Collaborating with the university to provide tailored resources such as flexible study options, dedicated counselling, and childcare support.
  • Advocating for financial support, including scholarships and grants for mature students.
  • Establishing a mentorship program where experienced mature students support newcomers, with volunteering certificates as recognition.

2. Build a Strong Community
A strong community helps mature students feel supported and less isolated. My goals include:

  • Creating networking opportunities, both online and in person, where mature students can connect, share experiences, and build friendships.
  • Organizing regular events like coffee mornings and study groups to foster a sense of belonging.

3. Promote Flexibility in Learning and Engagement
Mature students often juggle multiple responsibilities. I will:

  • Advocate for flexible learning options to accommodate family, work, or other commitments.
  • Work closely with faculty to ensure assignment deadlines and schedules are sensitive to the needs of mature students.

4. Career Development and Skills Workshops
Equipping mature students for career success is essential. I aim to:

  • Arrange career-focused events tailored to mature students, such as CV-building workshops, interview preparation, and networking with employers.
  • Promote skill-building workshops that address both academic and professional needs.

Why I’m the Right Candidate
As a mature student, I bring a firsthand understanding of our unique challenges and the perseverance required to pursue higher education at this stage of life. I am passionate, organized, and dedicated to making our voices heard. I am committed to advocating for mature students and ensuring we receive the respect, support, and resources we deserve.

Thank you for considering me for the role of Mature Students' Officer. Together, we can make our university experience more inclusive, empowering, and rewarding for all mature students.

Regards

Erum Bibi
