My name is Adefunmike Abioye ( Ade). I proudly identify with mature students at UH and I would like to represent their interests. I can relate to some of their concerns from a lived viewpoint. The matured population is defined and separated from others because the status is encapsulated with secondary school graduates for many years, retired or approaching retirement age, students with years of employment experience plus different family statuses.
In all the diversity, one thing is common to all and to all students, everyone has stepped out to be better. The goal to be better should not be hindered by age, there is therefore a need for community. Community as a goal will create events that will draw mature students together, celebrate their uniqueness, relate with them as individuals, support and make needed resources accessible.
UCAS identified that” education serving mature students need to respect their widely differing goals and background.” ( London Higher). This is going to be my goal, especially in an international university like ours.
It is very easy( not intentional) for this population to be sidetracked or forgotten, thanks to SU for making this opportunity available.
I will work with fellow mature students to create a periodic journal that will represent the voices, stories, experiences, and support of mature students. I will be available, transparent, and avail myself to communicate with all to ensure this path towards better is robust.
