Manifesto for International Student Officer
Candidate Name: Sumesh Thoopeliparambu Suku
Position: International Student Officer
Introduction
As an international student, I know the challenges of adapting to a new culture, meeting academic expectations, and building a sense of community. My own early days were challenging—navigating housing, securing part-time jobs, and finding connections. I’ve witnessed many students face similar struggles, often feeling isolated or even taken advantage of in areas like accommodation and employment.
If elected, I commit to being your advocate, your voice, and your ally, working to create a welcoming, supportive environment for all international students at the University of Hertfordshire.
My Vision
To involve every student in the vibrant life of the university, help them build confidence, and support them toward success in both academics and their future careers. I aim to ensure that at least 60% of international students secure placements with leading companies after graduation.

- Establish a volunteer-led welcome team to assist international students with initial pickups, onboarding guidance, and general advisory support.
-
Accommodation and Living Assistance
- Work to ensure more affordable and safe housing options for international students.
- Provide support for new students to help them navigate the housing market, find suitable roommates, and understand their rights as tenants.
-
Cultural and Social Connections
- Organize cultural events, workshops, and celebrations that allow us to share our diverse traditions and learn from one another.
- Arrange social activities that bring international and local students together, helping us all feel part of a united community.

- Campaign for additional part-time job opportunities, along with budgeting workshops to help students manage their finances effectively.
-
Career and Networking Opportunities

- Develop connections with local and international companies to create more job and internship opportunities.

-
Create a Platform for Student Feedback
- Set up regular open forums and an online platform where students can share concerns, offer suggestions, and receive timely responses.
- Ensure that international student voices are consistently communicated to the university administration.
