What is Qawwali?
Qawwali is a form of devotional music that originated in South Asia, particularly in Pakistan and India. It is a musical expression of mystical Islamic poetry, which aims to connect listeners with the divine.
Qawwali performances usually feature a lead singer or group of singers, accompanied by percussion instruments such as the tabla, dholak, and the hand-held daf. The lyrics of the songs are usually in Urdu or Punjabi, and the songs are often based on the works of famous Sufi poets such as Rumi, Bulleh Shah, and Amir Khusro.
What makes Qawwali unique is that it is not just music, but also a form of spiritual practice. Qawwali is often performed in spiritual gatherings, such as Sufi shrines and festivals, and it is believed that the music has the power to connect the listener with the divine and help them experience a sense of unity and transcendence.
Qawwali has gained popularity around the world, and famous Qawwali artists such as Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Abida Parveen have helped to bring this form of music to a global audience.
Overall, Qawwali is a beautiful and unique form of devotional music that is deeply rooted in the spiritual traditions of South Asia and is appreciated by people all around the world for its ability to uplift and inspire listeners.
