What is Easter?

Easter is considered the most important festival in the Christian calendar. It celebrates Jesus rising from the dead, 3 days after he was executed.

The lead up to Easter Monday is called the Holy week. Good Friday is the Friday before Easter Sunday and commemorates the execution of Jesus by crucifixion, and this is a day of mourning. On this day his body was taken down from the cross and buried in a cave tomb. Easter Sunday marks Jesus's resurrection. On Sunday some of his disciples visited the tomb where he was buried but found the stone had been moved and his body had gone. Jesus was later seen on that day, and for forty days afterwards, with his followers realising that God had resurrected Jesus.

When is Easter?

Easter Sunday varies as it depends on the Lunar Calendar. It is celebrated on the first Sunday after a full moon, on or after the 21st March. This year, Easter Sunday is on the 9th April.

Why do we have Easter Eggs?

An egg is a symbol of new life and as such symbolises the resurrection of Jesus. Nowadays, Easter Eggs are made of chocolate but traditionally, chicken eggs would be hard boiled and then decorated by hand.
