With over 100 active societies, there is a society for everyone.
Societies are a huge part of the student experience here at Herts. Formed by students, societies allow students with similar interests to come together as mini communities. With over 100 active societies and the ability to adopt and launch your own, there is a society for you.
Being part of a society is a great way to try something new, make friends for life and open yourself up to many different opportunities. Many students say that their best friends from university were made through a society. Research also shows that students that engage with a society achieve a better degree outcome than students who don't.
But don’t just take it from us, hear from current committee members on why you should join a society:
"Joining a society is a great way to socialise with likeminded people and discover new hobbies." – Jason, LGBT+ Society.
"The best part about joining a society is being able to exercise what you love with other," – Luis, Christian Union.
"Joining a society is a great opportunity to get you out of your comfort zone," – Abbie, Education Society.
"Joining a society enables you to be part of a community with others who share your background, beliefs or interests - something particularly vital for those living away from home," – Gavriel, Jewish Society.
"Joining an active society is a fantastic opportunity to develop and build self-confidence and strength," – Frankie, Pole & Aerial Society.
Societies are run by committees of students. This gives you the chance to take on a student leader position where you’ll be able to make the society the best it can be while developing heaps of employability skills.
Whether you join a society as a member, get involved in all the behind-the-scenes business as a committee member or start a new society from scratch, you’re bound to love being part of the society bubble.
